What Is Sapphire Crystal?
Watchmaking sapphire is synthetic, grown from pure aluminium oxide and then cut and polished into shape. Chemically it is identical to natural sapphire, but produced to flawless optical clarity. On the Mohs scale of hardness it rates a 9 — second only to diamond — which is why it resists scratches that would ruin lesser materials.
